Canine Hip Dysplagia

Canine Hip Dysplasia (aka dysplagia) is a painful and crippling disease that results in a weakened hip joint in dogs that causes painful inflammation and decreased flexibility.

Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers are susceptible to hip dysplasia but the disease is by no means limited to these breeds.

The word dysplasia means improper growth. Canine Hip Dysplasia literally means "improper growth of the canine hip". This improper growth makes the hip loose and wobbly, leading to increased movement of the hip. Over time, this will result in arthritis and lameness of the animal if left untreated.

dysplagia is a condition and disease that, while progressive, may appear in vastly different levels of severity in different animals. The Larger breeds are the most succeptible to dysplagia, as many as 50% may have some evidence of dysplagia but many smaller animals go on to develop dysplagia as well.

Surprising ly, even felines (cats) are at risk for a similar condition known as Feline Hip Dysplasia or FHD.

How do I know my animal might have dysplagia?

Many pets afflicted with hip dysplasia will likely have:

  1. problems walking up stairs
  2. slowness in rising
  3. lameness after exercise
  4. even personality changes due to their ever present pain

Animals with hip dysplasia are at greater risk of injury through normal activity.

It is entirely possible for a dog to have dysplagia but show no visible symptoms or a dog to have severe crippling symptoms. The only sure way to tell that your pet has dysplagia is via a radiographic (X-ray) exam.
